A Toddler’s Moon

Greetings All. I’m officially in my off season at work…well, unofficially actually until the government gets back to work and paper can be pushed again. Anyway, I’m getting back into the rhythm of being a full time mom. X is two now. Shocking really. The other evening we were out for a walk and up in the blue sky was the moon. When I asked X what was in the sky he answered, “A crescent Mama.” I took a second to burn that very sweet precious moment in my memory and then simply commented, “yep, that is a crescent Alexander.”

I find that I’m probably not taking enough pictures of my family and I am conflicted about it. You see after spending so many years behind a camera I find I cannot be truly present in a moment while pushing a button or staring through a lens. I’ve made only one New Years resolution, I think it was for 2010, and that was to be present in my everyday life, I know it sounds weird. But for so long I either reflected too much on the past or worried too much about the future that the here and now was getting lost in my mental shuffle. So, for the most part I’ve put the cameras down, but my goal is to have a few pictures to commemorate big moments and to catch snippets of our everyday life. I wish someone else would snap pics so I didn’t have to worry about it. Like the guy who documents Presidential moments. The dude just is there, blending in the background, snapping away.

I imagine the future of this winter will involve yet another round of trying to find play pals for X. I think my mindset is a bit different than last year. I’m no longer going to attempt the mommy dating route. I met some great moms last year and I just need to reconnect. And I’ve found a gal pal with a little one in town. I forgot myself for a time there. And, I can not, nor should I, compare myself to another mama…ever. That the facts of who I am, are just fine. I’m just a super basic, laid back, coffee guzzling woman that doesn’t really know what it would be like to live the life of the high rev do it all woman. I mean, who are these women who can get up and shit, shower, shave, make-up, hair, clean house, dinner made, with five kids in tow? It is nothing short of miracle and I applaud their master achievements. And for those mamas that work on top of it…there are no words. I on the other hand have set out other goals…like switching to Good Morning America from the Today Show and adding a bit more decaf to my morning blend so I can drink it past noon.

I’ve started doing the Insanity workouts…can’t say that will last, but I’m on week two, no developments yet…but if an ab does result, victory. As far as the boy is concerned my goal is when he wakes up we play, then I fix him breakfast, then an adventure, lunch, nap, do something after nap, dinner, evening play, evening program, nighttime books, sleep. Potty training might take place throughout. He’s not ready yet, though. I’ll ask him if he wants to potty on the big potty, he says, “uh…no.”

I like to fire off random questions to my two year old, just see where he stands on some things. First time I tried this he was in the tub. Random questions were this:
What is your favorite color – Green
What is your favorite food – Chips
What is your favorite animal – Cat
Who is your favorite person – Trains
What is your favorite toy – Trains

Well, my hard working, bread winning husband should be home soon. Not sure how to break it to him that the delicious roasted chicken I promised never thawed in the fridge. Maybe I’ll just walk him out onto the back deck, compliment his beautiful yard he’s been working so hard on, point at the sky and say, “Look honey, a crescent…and how’s grilled cheese for dinner?”

  1. LOL I love the way you adjusted so quickly to full time mommy! Hope to see you guys soon! And kiss X for me!

  2. Jessica I love reading your posts. Love hearing how x is starting to turn into a “grown up boy”. I had looked at the “crescent moon” and thought it beautiful. A couple weeks ago it was a gorgeous full moon –even took a picture of it. Rick came across the street and asked what I was doing? Taking a picture of the moon through the tree. He said “Ah–it will be there again next month”. So it goes. ha.
Grilled cheese sounds good to me –GMW
