Something Old, Something New

Greetings all. Steve has posted a couple of things lately, thought I’d do the same. So, I’m sure if you are facebook friends with me, you might be wondering what the hell I’m inundating your newsfeed with. Ya, I’ve taken the first steps in a passion project. I thought I’d tell you how it came about, so if your interested, cool…if not, cool.

You can thank my Tivo for instigating all of this. I was folding laundry and the Tivo turned to the Sundance channel, and Mortified Nation came on. I watched it and by the end I had found Mortified’s website and emailed a very short inquiry if anyone had tried to start a Mortified chapter in Nebraska. MORTIFIED is a storytelling project where adults share the strange & embarrassing artifacts they saved from childhood. And I want to produce it in Nebraska. That’s it in a nut shell.

I’m just taking this process as the steps come. It helps that Mortified’s producer is a cool guy. He’s open to bringing Mortified here if there is enough interest. But in what capacity the live show is produced as remains a question. They are playing around with a touring format, which might be a great first step in creating a chapter here. They are out in L.A. and haven’t spent anytime here in Nebraska. It’s understandable to not want to commit to a long term chapter not knowing what kind of market is here. I just have to prove to them we have a market, and lots of folks who’d be brave enough to “share the shame” and lots of folks who’d want to watch. In my mind their is not an “if”, only a when.

So, ya, we aren’t New York, we aren’t Portland, or Austin, or Chicago, or L.A., thank goodness because they already have chapters…. So, the producers are letting me show Mortified Nation to drum up interest and we’ll see what happens. I will say that if you are easily offended by the angst ridden writings of teens just trying to find their way in life, which includes awful language and sexual situations, best not buy a ticket. The Lincoln show has come together nicely. I’ll put a showing in Omaha, too. But I’ve been encouraged to put my effort into the Lincoln showing, before I sink more cash into the Omaha showing. So right now I’m fishing around for the right place and/or partnership in Omaha to show the film. There are good prospects, so we’ll see what happens.

Anyway, since this is a passion project there really isn’t any money in it at this point. I’m hoping to earn enough through the showing of the film to break even, but if I could fund raise enough to get out to L.A. and be Danielson, to learn the Mortified way, as they request…well…that’s just one more step now isn’t it, a very very promising step. I’ll get out there, just not sure when.

I suppose you might be asking, don’t you have a kid to take care of? What about Steve? Ummm, you still have the day job right? Right now, all of this is balanced. It helps having a seasonal job. I have this need to leave a stamp, be apart of something my heart is in. Mortified struck a chord and I’m running with it. What will be will be. But I’m in it until it fizzles out or it nestles itself into an avenue of entertainment we can depend on for laughs, awkward moments and totally relatable content that anyone can take part in…no experience needed, just childhood artifacts and a smidge of brave…or on the other end, a ticket and a drink, and a BFF or two.
